Why “real” news can be more dangerous than fake news

As the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election reverberates around the world, the mass media is conducting a witch-hunt against so-called ‘fake news’ websites whose influence it claims affected the result. In manipulations reminiscent of the ‘Ministry of Truth’ in George Orwell’s classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, lists are being published of sites supposedly publishing fake stories; videos are lecturing us on how we can apparently spot them; and demands are being made for search engines and social media platforms to diminish their reach. Seemingly, after decades of producing dumbed-down fake news itself, the media is worried that its viewers and readers are beginning to turn away and think for themselves.
