These photographs illustrate fruit and vegetable gardening taking place at the home of Mr. Karyango Deogratius, whose family lives at one of the demonstration homes taking part in our community gardening project in Uganda. A family of six, they all collectively share responsibility for the promotion of our Free Health for All, Free Food for All, and Work for All campaigns in their community.
In this family, the children are responsible for the management of nursery beds and the growing of fruits and vegetables, while the parents take responsibility for increasing the production of food. They aim to produce sufficient surplus food that can be sold to help increase the family income.
The produce grown at this home includes passion fruit, papaya, cabbage, beetroot, carrots, and green pepper. The family also grows artemisia annua (sweet wormwood) for the management of malaria in their community, and coffee. Towards further increasing their income, the family has started a coffee plantation and now additionally rears chickens, pigs and cattle.
