As part of the Movement of Life Uganda team’s new community project, national coordinator Gyavira Mwesigwa recently visited the home of Mr Nuwagira John in Nyamitanga division, Mbarara city. Mr John is planning to set up a demonstration garden to prove to town dwellers in his country that it is possible to grow fruit trees and vegetables in relatively small spaces. Unlike in industrialized countries where land is expensive and scarce, people in Uganda commonly have sufficient land available to set up decent-sized gardens. Through enabling them to improve their micronutrient intake and sell their excess produce, the setting up of such gardens can benefit both their health and their incomes.
